The writing of academic or scholarly work is a common activity in institutions of learning as well as in research institutions. These papers may be used in presenting academic or research findings that are either from first hand, first time experimental discoveries or as part of progressive assessments meant to determine the extent to which students have grasped the ideas and concepts imparted on them in class. There are different academic forms of writing such as research papers, peer reviews, essays and laboratory reports-just to mention but a few. All these differ in the manner in which they are written, and they form the general categories of scholarly works that covered within institutions of learning.

However, the writing of papers under a similar category may actually differ on grounds of the academic styles that may be applied in writing these papers. This is because there are different academic writing styles that are dedicated to the writing of academic papers within different fields of study. These scholarly styles of writing include AMA citation style (The American Medical Association style of writing), APA style (The American Psychological Association style of writing), MLA style (The Modern Language Association style of writing), ASA style, Harvard writing style and Turabian style-just to mention but a few. In this work the use of the AMA citation style commonly applied in the medical fields shall be highlighted.

The AMA citation style is commonly applied within the field of medicine and medical related sciences. In AMA citation style full citations to complement the in-text citations should be included at the end of the paper in the bibliography list. It should also be noted that unlike the alphabetical ordering of the bibliography in most other writing styles, AMA citation style requires that the list of references be numbered and arranged according to the order in which they appear within the main body of the paper's text. This is actually one of the biggest differences in the AMA citation style. T

he AMA citation style uses in-text citations that use superscript Arabic numerals that are listed in a sequentially increasing order, therefore; there is no use of words, authors' names, pages or dates of publication when making an in-text citation within an AMA citation style paper. Thus an AMA citation style paper should have end notes that carry the references that are denoted by the Arabic numerals that are used to depict cited content within the main body of the work. In cases where a writer of an AMA citation style paper would like to cite the same work more than one, there should be an inclusion of the specific page from which the citation is being made so as to differentiate it from any other earlier citation that may have been made within the same work.

When making citations of books and many other print material within AMA citation style papers, the following details should be basically included: the author/s' last name and initials of the other names, title and sub-title of the book should included and italicized, the volume number and title should also be included, the edition, publication locality, the publication year, the year of the acquisition of copyright, the publishing company as well as page numbers in cases where specific pages are cited. These are the basic outlines of how an AMA citation style paper should be referenced and how the citations within the AMA citation style papers should be made.
